Jersey Quest — Privacy Policy

Jersey Quest is a free, location-based collecting game about the island of Jersey. We built it privacy-first: it’s free, has no third-party advertising, does not track you across other apps or websites, and does not sell or share your personal data with data brokers or advertisers.

1. The short version

• Most of what the app does happens on your device.
• Your game progress and souvenir photos stay on your device and, if you allow it, in your own Apple iCloud — private, we can’t see them.
• The cross-platform leaderboard, challenges and nicknames run on Google Firebase (servers in the EU). There we store only an anonymous player id, your nickname and your score/counts — nothing else that identifies you.
• Location shows nearby places and lets you collect them; your precise location is not sent to us.
• Analytics are on by default but only ever send anonymous, aggregate data that helps develop and expand the island’s tourism offer. You can turn them off during onboarding or in Settings → Privacy.
• A nickname you choose (optional) appears publicly on the leaderboard.
• You can wipe everything we hold about you online at any time with “Delete my data” in Settings → Privacy.

2. Information we handle, and why

Location (When In Use, optionally Always)

Shows nearby places, unlocks collecting when you’re close, draws walking routes, and — only if you enable it — auto-collects cliff-route waypoints in the background. Your precise location is processed on your device and not transmitted to us. You can change access anytime in iOS Settings.

Camera

Used to take souvenir photos and to scan QR codes (e.g. to join a challenge). Images are processed on your device.

Photos

If you enable “Also save to Photos”, souvenirs are saved to your library (write only). We do not read your photo library.

Apple iCloud (CloudKit) — your private progress

We use your own iCloud to store your game progress (private — we can’t see it) and, optionally, to back up your souvenir photos to your private iCloud (default on; switch off in Settings → Privacy). iCloud is operated by Apple under Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Google Firebase — leaderboard, challenges & nicknames

The cross-platform leaderboard, challenges and unique nicknames (shared between the iOS and Android apps) run on Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore), with data stored in the European Union. We store the bare minimum: an anonymous, pseudonymous player id, your nickname, and your score/counts — visible to other players by design. We do not store your name, email, precise location or any contact details. Firebase acts as our data processor (Google) under the Firebase Privacy and Security terms. You can erase all of this at any time — see “Delete my data” below.

Anonymous tourism statistics (our Firebase)

If analytics are on, the app also increments anonymous aggregate counters in our Firebase (e.g. how many times a place, parish or category was collected, and a locals-vs-visitors split). These are just numbers — they contain no player id, nickname or personal data, cannot be linked to you, and therefore are kept as anonymous statistics even if you delete your account.

Nickname

Optional and shown publicly on the leaderboard. Please don’t use information you don’t want to be public.

Nickname rules. Nicknames must not be vulgar, offensive, hateful, harassing, discriminatory or racist, impersonate others, or otherwise target or demean any person or group. We use an automatic filter, but some names may slip through — a moderator may remove a nickname, hide or delete a leaderboard/challenge entry, or remove a player from the leaderboard or a challenge without prior warning if a name is judged inappropriate. Choosing a new, acceptable nickname lets you rejoin.

A device player ID

A random, pseudonymous identifier (in your Keychain and iCloud key-value storage) so progress survives reinstalling and follows your Apple ID. It is not your name, email, or an advertising identifier.

Analytics (on by default, opt-out)

Unless you turn it off, the app sends anonymous, aggregate usage signals via TelemetryDeck (which places get collected, their category/parish, local vs visitor). This anonymous data helps develop and expand the island’s tourism offer. Signals are tied to the random player ID — not your name or email — and are never used for ads or cross-app tracking. 3. What we do NOT do

• No third-party advertising or ad networks.
• No tracking across other apps/websites (no ATT prompt needed).
• No selling or sharing of personal data with data brokers/advertisers.
• No collection of contacts, browsing history, or precise location logs on our servers.

4. Sharing

We don’t sell your data. Limited data is handled by our processors: Apple iCloud/CloudKit (your private progress & souvenir backup), Google Firebase (cross-platform leaderboard, challenges & nicknames — anonymous id, nickname and score, stored in the EU), and TelemetryDeck (anonymous analytics, on by default; you can opt out). Your public leaderboard nickname and score are visible to other players by design.

5. Children

Jersey Quest is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children; contact us to remove anything provided by a child.

6. Your choices & rights

• Location / Camera / Photos: iOS Settings → Jersey Quest.
• Analytics, iCloud backup, Save to Photos: Settings → Privacy.
• Reset profile: removes your leaderboard entry and frees your nickname.
• Delete my data (Settings → Privacy): self-service, one tap. Permanently erases everything we hold about you online in Firebase — your nickname, score and challenge entries, plus the anonymous identity behind them. Your on-device stamps and souvenirs are kept on your phone. Anonymous tourism statistics (which contain no personal data and can’t identify you) are not affected.
• Delete on-device data: delete the app; manage private iCloud data in iCloud, or contact us.

Under the EU/UK GDPR and the Data Protection (Jersey) Law 2018 you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or object. Contact us via our contact form. Where we rely on consent (analytics, location), you can withdraw it anytime.

7. Retention & security

Your leaderboard/challenge data in Firebase (anonymous id, nickname, score) is kept until you reset your profile or use “Delete my data”, or ask us to remove it. Anonymous aggregate statistics, which cannot identify you, may be kept indefinitely. Data is stored in the EU and in transit uses HTTPS; iCloud data is protected by Apple’s security and Firebase by Google’s. No system is perfectly secure, but we use standard, reasonable safeguards.

8. Changes

We may update this policy as the app evolves; we’ll revise the date above and notify in-app for material changes.

9. Cookies on this website (jerseyquest.app)

This website sets no cookies and uses no Google Analytics or third-party trackers — so there is no cookie banner. The only analytics we run is our own cookieless, anonymous aggregate counter: page views, button clicks, coarse device type and (where available) visitor country — kept as pure aggregate numbers with no cookies, no IP stored and no visitor identifier. Because these figures are anonymous and cannot identify you, they are collected for all visitors and are not tied to any individual.
