The story
The island's principal museum, holding Jersey's collections of history and art, with a film and a geopark visitor centre on the free ground floor and the permanent island exhibition above. Attached to it is a gas-lit Victorian house, restored and furnished, which tells the story of Dr Charles Ginestet, who left it behind and went to France to begin again. Among the paintings is Sir John Everett Millais's portrait of Lillie Langtry, who was born on the island and left it for a career that made her one of the most photographed women in Europe.
