Jersey's capital and only town, wrapped around a harbour that made it rich. St Helier is where the island does its shopping, its politics and its remembering: the Royal Square where the last battle was fought in 1781, the Liberation Sculpture where the occupation ended in 1945, a Victorian covered market that has hardly changed since 1882.

It is also the densest collecting ground on the island — dozens of places within a short walk of each other, from the castle in the bay to a clock that puts on a show every hour. A wet afternoon here can fill half a passport.
