The story
Built in 1837, and host to Victor Hugo on his arrival in Jersey in 1852, before he took a house at Grève d'Azette. The Seymour family bought the hotel in 1930. During the Occupation the German forces took it over as their naval headquarters for the island. On 9 May 1945 the Union Jack was raised from its balcony in front of a crowd filling the square below, marking the Liberation of Jersey; the German forces in the Channel Islands had signed their surrender that morning aboard HMS Bulldog off Guernsey. The flag is raised from the same balcony every Liberation Day.
