The story
One of the round coastal towers built for Jersey's defence from the late 1770s, when Governor Henry Seymour Conway's plan for a ring of towers was approved by George III. Ouaisné Tower, also recorded as St Brelade's No. 1, was built in the 1780s and stands at the northern end of the beach, guarding the bay below Portelet Common. During the Napoleonic Wars a gun was mounted on the roof platform. Of around 30 towers built, 24 still stand. Today the tower is privately owned, so admire it from the sand - the red and white painted seaward side is a navigation mark for boats.
