The story
In 1785, men levelling the top of Town Hill for a parade ground uncovered a Neolithic dolmen. It was given to the Governor of Jersey, Field Marshal Henry Seymour Conway, who had it dismantled and shipped to his house at Park Place near Henley-on-Thames in 1788, where it was re-erected. It still stands there. Work on the fortress itself began on 7 November 1806 under Lieutenant-Governor George Don, to a design by Lieutenant-General John Humfrey, and finished in 1814. It never saw action. The Germans added platforms for flak guns, and since the 1960s the hill has held a leisure centre.
