The story
A memorial at La Corbière to the rescue of Easter Monday, 17 April 1995, when the French catamaran Saint-Malo, on passage from Jersey to Sark, struck a rock about 900 metres north of the lighthouse. Visibility was good, but a spring tide was ebbing to the west with a westerly Force 5 behind it. Vessels including the Havelet, the Solidor, Condor 8 and the Tridents assisted, and the captain of the Isle of Man diverted his own ship to shelter the stricken catamaran; all 307 passengers and crew came off the partly submerged vessel. The memorial, a pair of clasped hands five feet high, was carved by Derek Tristram from Jersey granite that had been part of the harbour wall, and unveiled on 17 April 1997.
