The story
A German infantry strongpoint on the La Corbière headland: six fortifications with walls and ceilings 2 m thick, held by 5 NCOs and 19 men. The armament included two captured French 10.5 cm K331(f) coastal defence guns in casemates, an M19 automatic fortress mortar firing through an armoured turret, heavy machine guns including a pair in a Type 634 six-loophole turret, a 60 cm searchlight, an anti-tank rocket launcher and three defence flamethrowers. The mortar bunker doubled as the command post and the communications hub, linked underground to the machine-gun turret. The north-facing gun casemate still holds its original gun; its south-facing twin was cut up in post-war scrap drives. The naval direction-finding tower MP2 stands on the same headland but belonged to the navy.
