The story
Grouville No. 1 in the chain of round towers begun under Governor Conway after 1778, La Rocque Tower was built in the late 18th century to cover the south-east corner of the island, where the shallow water and rocky shore made a landing easy to attempt. It was exactly here, in January 1781, that a French force came ashore on the night before the Battle of Jersey, slipping past guards who had left their post. Over the years a house has been built around the tower, and it remains a private home today - so enjoy it from the sand or the road. From the beach you can also pick out Seymour Tower on its islet and, nearer the harbour, the smaller Platte Rocque Tower built in 1781.
