The story
The great east-coast bay between Gorey and La Rocque, given its 'Royal' title after Queen Victoria's visit in 1859. Its shallow, sandy floor is farmed for oysters, and at low spring tides the sea retreats more than a mile to reveal a landscape of sand, rocks and reef where Seymour Tower stands. Along the shore are the Royal Jersey Golf Club, founded in 1878 and the home course of the six-times Open champion Harry Vardon, and a string of Napoleonic-era towers and forts.
