The story
Built in 1782 on the islet of L'Avarison, far out on the seabed off the south-east coast, after a French force landed at La Rocque and nearly took the island the year before. It is the only square tower in Sir Henry Seymour Conway's chain of coastal towers; all the others are round. The walk out crosses one of Europe's great tidal landscapes and should not be attempted without a guide. When the tide turns here, it comes in behind you.
