The story
A group of life-size Jersey cattle in bronze, cast by the lost wax method at the Castle Fine Arts foundry and set up in the centre of St Helier. The sculptor was John McKenna, and it was unveiled on 29 September 2001 by the Bailiff of Jersey, Sir Philip Bailhache. About £170,000 was raised by public subscription. The inscription describes it as a tribute to the island breed and a commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the World Jersey Cattle Bureau. The Jersey originates here, is valued as a dairy animal for the richness of its milk, has been protected in its island home by legislation dating from 1763, and has been exported around the world since the eighteenth century.
