Free things to do in Jersey

Most of what makes Jersey worth visiting is not behind a ticket desk. The coast path is free. The towers, forts and bunkers that ring the island are free to walk up to and, often, into. The dolmens stand in fields. The castles that charge admission are two; the ruins that don’t are a dozen.

This is the island for people who would rather spend on a good lunch than on entry fees — and Jersey Quest is free too, no ads and no login, so the whole day costs the bus fare.

Headlands and viewpoints

The four corners of the island and the high ground between them. Grosnez for the sunset, Noirmont for the guns, Sorel for the other islands, Les Platons for the widest view of all.

Towers, forts and bunkers

Two centuries of defences, all free to walk up to. The round towers are on the beaches; the German concrete is on the headlands and free to walk around from the outside — the bunkers that open their doors on certain days charge a small entry, so they are not listed here. Some of the forts are let as holiday homes: the walls, the view and the stamp are free, the inside is for whoever is staying that week.

Kempt Tower, Archirondel Tower, La Crête Fort, Fort Leicester, Corbière Radio Tower (MP2) are holiday lets — free to walk up to and collect, the inside is for guests only.

Dolmens and standing stones

Six thousand years old and standing in the open. La Hougue Bie charges; the rest do not.

Town, for nothing

St Helier’s squares, statues and markets, the Liberation Sculpture, the parks, and the walk out to the Hermitage at low tide.
