The story
St Helier's covered market opened in 1882 and has hardly changed since: a hall of cast-iron columns and arches under a glass roof, with a fountain in the middle and stalls of fruit, vegetables, flowers, bread and local produce around it. It is the everyday heart of the town rather than a tourist attraction, which is what makes it worth visiting — Jersey Royals in spring, tomatoes and apples in autumn, and traders who have been there for generations.
