Les Minquiers
A vast reef south of Jersey: close to a hundred square kilometres of rock, sand and weed at low tide, and just nine small rocks at high tide.
The story
A vast reef south of Jersey: close to a hundred square kilometres of rock, sand and weed at low tide, and just nine small rocks at high tide. The largest, Maîtresse Île, carries a hamlet of granite huts along a single street. Like the Écréhous, the Minquiers belong to Jersey - a ruling of the International Court of Justice confirmed it in 1953 - and are part of the parish of Grouville. Since 2005 the whole reef has been a protected wetland of international importance. Grey seals, bottlenose dolphins, shags and cormorants live here; visitors come by boat only.
