The story

A Martello tower built between 1808 and 1810 at the foot of the cliffs on Noirmont Point, to command the approaches to St Aubin's Bay. It carried a single 18-pounder gun on top and a second 18-pounder in a battery at its base, and measures 26 feet across and 23 feet high. The name is said to come from a Norse word meaning to tack, or to go about — the manoeuvre sailing vessels had to make at this point to enter the bay. The tower is painted black and white to serve as a daymark, and since 1915 it has carried a light that flashes every 12 seconds.
