The story
Giant willow puffins on the Plémont headland, raised by the National Trust for Jersey with Birds On The Edge, its partnership with the Government of Jersey and Durrell. Just before the First World War an estimated 300 pairs of puffins bred on this coast; by 1920 there were 20 pairs left, and the Trust now counts 8 birds returning. The Atlantic puffin is a Jersey Red Listed species. Each pair lays a single egg a year, in a burrow, under a boulder or in a cliff crevice, and rats and feral cats take eggs and chicks. The birds are ashore only from March to July, within the Plémont seabird protection zone, which runs to Le Douet de la Mer. An anti-predator fence is planned for the headland.
