The biggest parish and the wildest: the whole Atlantic coast from La Pulente to Grosnez, five miles of beach, dune and surf with the sunset at the end of every day. St Ouen (Saint Ouën in Jèrriais) has kept more of the old island than anywhere else — its manor, its lanes, its speech.

Along the bay stand towers from two centuries and the great German battery at Moltke; inland lie dolmens, the island's largest freshwater pond and a racecourse on the cliffs. Bring wind-proof clothing.
