Occupation Trail

From July 1940 to May 1945 Jersey was the only British soil occupied by Germany, and Hitler ordered it turned into a fortress. The result is still everywhere: observation towers on the headlands, gun batteries above the bays, a hospital dug into a hillside by forced labour, resistance nests on every beach that could take a landing. Most of it was never fired in anger; the island was bypassed and simply starved until Liberation Day.

This collection takes you to the places where that history is easiest to read — the concrete at Noirmont and Corbière, the great guns at Moltke, the tunnels at St Lawrence, and the hotel balcony in St Helier where the Union flag went up again on 9 May 1945. Open sites, museums and memorials; some are free to walk around at any hour, a few have opening hours.
