The story
An islet fort in St Aubin's Bay built around a tower begun for Henry VIII and said to be approaching completion by the end of 1542: a single storey with openings for guns and a rounded southern face to deflect shot. In October 1643 Parliamentary forces threw bulwarks around the tower and it became a fort. Sir George Carteret later strengthened it to cover the privateering fleet based in the harbour at St Aubin. The defences were remade in 1839, a date cut into the keystone of the gateway, and during the Occupation the Germans added mortar pits, gun casemates and tank turrets in concrete. The causeway from St Aubin covers on a rising tide.
