The story
Jersey's main port before St Helier's harbour was built, St Aubin grew rich in the 17th and 18th centuries on trade with Newfoundland and the privateering that went with it. The granite houses of the merchants still line the bulwarks and the steep lanes behind. St Aubin's Fort stands on an islet in the harbour mouth, begun in the 1540s and reachable on foot at low water. The former Jersey Railway line from St Helier is now the flat Railway Walk that ends here.
