Jersey in two days

Jersey is nine miles by five. That sounds small until you try to see it: the coast alone is more than 40 miles of bays, cliffs and headlands, and the best of it is at the ends of the island, not the middle. Two days is enough for the highlights if you go with a plan — one day on the sheltered south and the Atlantic west, one day on the east-coast castles and the north cliffs.

Both days start in St Helier, where the buses leave from. Neither needs a car, though day two is easier with one. Every stop below is a real, collectible place in Jersey Quest, so if you install the app before you set out, the same two days come back as a passport full of stamps.

Day 1 morning — the town and the castle in the bay

Start at Liberation Square and the market, then walk the causeway to Elizabeth Castle at low water — or take the amphibious ferry if the tide is in. Allow two hours for the castle.

Day 1 afternoon — St Aubin, Noirmont and the sunset coast

Bus 15 or the flat Railway Walk to St Aubin. From the harbour village climb to Noirmont Point for the guns and the view, drop into St Brélade’s Bay, and finish at Corbière lighthouse for the sunset. Check the tide before walking out to the lighthouse.

Day 2 morning — Gorey and the east coast

Bus 1 to Gorey. Mont Orgueil takes a morning by itself; the harbour below it is where to eat. If the tide is low, the walk out along the Royal Bay towards Seymour Tower is the most extraordinary hour on the island — but only with a guide, and never on a rising tide.

Day 2 afternoon — the north cliffs

Rozel, Bouley Bay and Bonne Nuit are three bays cut into the cliffs, each with a harbour at the bottom and a fort above. Pick two and walk the cliff path between them. End at Devil’s Hole or, with a car, at Grosnez for the last light.
