The story
The parish church of Jersey's largest and wildest parish, standing in the fields between St Ouen's Manor and the dunes — and one of the oldest churches on the island, already recorded in the 1100s. It is dedicated to Ouen, a seventh-century bishop of Rouen, which says everything about where Jersey looked for its saints. Built and rebuilt in island granite over four centuries, with a squat tower and short spire, it was for generations the church of the de Carteret family, seigneurs of the manor next door, whose memorials line the walls. Inside it is cool, plain and very old; outside, larks and the sound of the west-coast surf.
