The story
The headland is preserved as a memorial to the Occupation, and it carries the concrete of that Occupation on its back. Batterie Lothringen was the island's only naval coastal battery, armed with 150 mm naval guns first made in 1917 for German warships of the First World War. In August 1944 there was a fierce engagement off this point involving American motor torpedo boats; a memorial here remembers the crews of PT 503 and PT 509.
