The story
One of 23 round towers built to General Conway's scheme between 1778 and 1801, standing on the rock called La Roche Rondel; work began in November 1792 and was finished by 1794. Its base is granite, but rhyolite takes over about a third of the way up and the whole upper section is rhyolite — the nearest granite was a long way off and there was a rhyolite quarry close by at La Crête. The tower is painted red and white; its most prominent use after its military life has been as a navigation marker, and a photograph of about 1925 already shows it painted. Beside it lies the unfinished southern arm of the harbour the Royal Navy began at St Catherine's. The works passed to the island in 1878.
