The story
A Martello tower completed in 1837 on the hill above Anne Port, built to cover Anne Port to the north and Gorey Harbour to the south against bombardment from the sea. It is the only Martello on Jersey with a ditch around it: 12 feet deep and 10 feet across, crossed by a drawbridge. The tower stands 33 feet high and 32 feet in diameter, and was armed with a single 24-pounder gun. During the Occupation the German forces mounted a small anti-aircraft gun on top and built an entire strongpoint around it, held by a garrison of ninety-nine men. The National Trust for Jersey administers the site.
