Jersey's east coast looks straight at France, which is why it carries more fortification per mile than anywhere else on the island. Walk out along the Victorian breakwater at St Catherine, pass the towers at Archirondel and Victoria, and come round the headland to the sight the whole coast is built around: Mont Orgueil Castle above Gorey harbour. South of it the Royal Bay of Grouville opens out — oyster beds, Fort Henry on the shore, and at low tide the long walk out to Seymour Tower. The coast ends among the rocks and towers of St Clement, where Icho Tower and Green Island wait for the sea to go out.
