The story
A fortified Jersey Round Tower of Sir Henry Seymour Conway's design, standing on the sea wall at Le Hocq in St Clement. Le Hocq is a Jèrriais name meaning the headland, or the cape. The exact date of building is unknown, but the tower was up by the Battle of Jersey in January 1781: de Rullecourt's invading force turned inland at Pontac to avoid passing it. The ground floor held a brick-lined, vaulted magazine with 20 barrels of gunpowder, and the two floors above were quarters for a sergeant and 12 militiamen. An 18-pounder carronade stood on the roof, with four machicolations for firing down on attackers, and three more cannon on a paved platform alongside. Jersey Heritage looks after the tower for the Parish of St Clement.
