St Martin's Church
A parish church properly called St Martin-le-Vieux, its nucleus a chantry chapel and its oldest fabric the chancel, part of the nave and the lower tower; the tower was raised and given its octagonal spire in the thirteenth century and a south aisle was added in the fifteenth.
The story
A parish church properly called St Martin-le-Vieux, its nucleus a chantry chapel and its oldest fabric the chancel, part of the nave and the lower tower; the tower was raised and given its octagonal spire in the thirteenth century and a south aisle was added in the fifteenth. On the north side is Dean Mabon's Chapel, named after the man who became Rector here and Dean of Jersey in 1519 and who also acted as Bailiff for several years. Mabon made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and built the chapel on the mound at La Hougue Bie; tradition holds that he died by his own hand in the chapel that bears his name and was buried outside its north wall. The chapel has since served as a chantry, a mortuary and an arsenal, and now houses the organ. A sundial of 1786 on the south side carries the initials of George Bandinel.
