The story
A capstoned gallery grave on the north-east coast, once covered by a long mound and ringed by eighteen standing stones. Daniel Defoe mentioned it in his tour of Great Britain, so it was known by 1748. When it was first excavated in 1868 the capstones had collapsed inward; the diggers raised them and rebuilt the tomb as they believed it had looked. In 1919 the Société Jersiaise moved the porthole stone to the east end, though archaeologists now think it may originally have stood inside, dividing the chamber in two.
