Jersey Zoo (Durrell)

The story

Founded in 1959 by the author and naturalist Gerald Durrell at Les Augrès Manor in Trinity, with a purpose that was unusual at the time: to breed endangered animals rather than simply display them. The zoo is the home of the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, whose work has helped bring back species such as the pink pigeon and Mauritius kestrel. Gorillas, orangutans, lemurs and Andean bears live in wooded enclosures across the valley, and the dodo is the emblem over the gate.
