Best sunset spots in Jersey

Jersey faces west. The whole Atlantic side of the island — from the lighthouse at Corbière up to the castle at Grosnez — looks straight into the setting sun, with open sea beyond. That makes the sunset the one event on the island you can plan a day around and never miss, whatever the tide is doing.

The places below are ordered south to north along that coast. All are free, most are on or near a bus route, and every one is a stamp in Jersey Quest — collect it while the light is still good, then put the phone away.

The south-west corner — Noirmont, Portelet and Beauport

These face south-west, so they take the sunset in winter when the sun sets far to the south. Noirmont has the German guns and a wide view over St Aubin’s Bay; Beauport is a small cove with a headland above it and the best light on the island.

Corbière — the classic

The lighthouse on its rock at the island’s south-west tip is the sunset everyone photographs. The causeway floods at high water — watch the siren and the tide, and if the sea is in, the view from the headland is just as good. The radio tower above it and the bunkers along the road are part of the same walk.

St Ouen’s Bay — five miles of it

The long beach faces due west, so the sun sets into the sea from anywhere along it. La Pulente at the south end and the towers along the sea wall are the easy spots; the dunes behind are the quiet ones. Surfers stay out until the last light.

The north-west headland — Grosnez and Plémont

In summer the sun sets far to the north-west, and this is where to be: the castle ruin on the cliff, the racecourse behind it, and Plémont bay below. The furthest from town and the least crowded.
