Trinity Parish Church

The story

One of the twelve medieval parish churches of Jersey, standing above Bouley Bay. The chancel dates from the eleventh or early twelfth century and was built by parishioners from sea-worn pebbles carried up from the bay; the rose window in the west gable is the only one in any Jersey parish church. On 24 November 1643 the States of Jersey were summoned to meet in the church, where George Carteret laid his commission as Lieutenant-Governor and his patent as Bailiff before them and took the oaths of office, ending Parliament's government of the island. A page covering 1648-49 has been cut out of the parish register; it has been suggested that it recorded the birth of James La Cloche, said to be a natural son of Charles II.
