Fort Leicester

The story

Built in 1836 on the western side of Bouley Bay as part of an island-wide scheme against French invasion. It was made to hold five heavy cannon, probably 32-pounders with a range of about two miles, and would have needed around thirty men and one officer of the Militia to work them. During the Occupation the Germans added searchlight housing and gun emplacements within the traversing platforms, and this coastline was defended by a battalion of the Russiskaya Osvoboditelnaya Armiya under the command of the German army. From 1990 the fort housed conservation volunteers and then the Bouley Bay Boat Owners Club, and in 2005 it passed to the public of Jersey.
