Fort Henry

The story

Listed Grade 1, and described in the island's own register as the only fort of its kind on Jersey and unique in a British Isles context. Building began soon after 1772, in the early Conway period, among the sand dunes of Grouville Bay, and it was first called Fort Conway. A heavy battered curtain wall encloses a yard; on the seaward side stands a square keep with machicolations on diagonally opposite corners, flanked by raised stone gun platforms. Some original timber loophole doorframes survive inside. In 1941 the Germans cut steel and concrete into the keep and added two projecting cantilevered platforms for searchlights. The yard is now a maintenance depot for the Royal Jersey Golf Club.
