L'Êtacquerel Fort

The story

A fort built to hold the eastern flank of Bouley Bay. Its date of construction is not given here because the sources disagree. As the French threat receded the British government let forts of this kind go, and the Ordnance Survey maps of 1935, 1981 and 2003 all mark L'Étacquerel as disused. The States of Jersey spent £90,000 on repairs in the early 1990s and the fort has since been restored and opened for stays. On the western side of the same bay stands Fort Leicester, built to cover the other half of the water.
