The story
A five-mile arc of Atlantic beach along the whole west coast, from L'Étacq in the north to La Pulente in the south, backed by dunes and the flat road islanders call the Five Mile Road. Open to the ocean swell, it is the centre of Jersey surfing and hosts contests every year. Along its length stand La Rocco Tower offshore, Kempt Tower and other Napoleonic-era defences, and behind the dunes lie Les Mielles, a protected landscape of grassland, ponds and wildlife. Beware the strong currents: swim only near the lifeguard flags.
