The story
La Mare au Seigneur, the largest natural freshwater wetland in Jersey, lies behind the dunes of St Ouen's Bay. Its reed beds are the island's most important bird reserve — marsh harriers, warblers and wintering wildfowl — and the wet meadows beside it are famous for the loose-flowered orchid, which turns the fields purple in late May and June. The Wetland Centre hide, cared for by the National Trust for Jersey, gives a clear view across the water without disturbing the birds.
