The story
A Martello tower on Five Mile Road, completed by the British in 1834 and named after Sir James Kempt, Master-General of the Ordnance from 1830 to 1834. It was armed with a 24-pounder gun and two 24-pounder short guns, and stood behind a paved redoubt carrying three more 24-pounders — six guns on one position, a considerably heavier defence than Lewis Tower further along the bay. The door at ground level is not part of the original building: it was put in during the German Occupation, a century after the tower was finished.
