The north coast cliff path
The north coast is the island stood on end. Where the south slopes gently into the sea, the north drops from farmland straight down granite cliffs, and the path runs along the top of them for the whole length of the island — roughly fifteen miles from the ruined castle at Grosnez in the west to Rozel harbour in the east.
It is not a walk to do in a day unless you are fit and the days are long. It is a walk to do in stretches: each of the bays below has a bus stop or a car park, a harbour or a beach to arrive at, and usually somewhere to eat. Walk one stretch, take the bus back, come again. Grosnez to Grève de Lecq — the wild west end
Start at the castle ruin on the headland, with the racecourse and the German tower behind you. The path swings east past Plémont — the puffins nest on the cliffs here in spring — and drops to the sand at Grève de Lecq, where there is a beach, a tower and a bus back to town.
Grève de Lecq to Bonne Nuit — the high ground
The longest and highest stretch. Devil’s Hole is a collapsed sea cave you look down into; Sorel Point is the island’s northernmost tip; the path then climbs to the top of the island before dropping into Bonne Nuit, a harbour with a fort on the rock above it.
Bonne Nuit to Bouley Bay — the steep middle
Short on the map, steep on the ground. The path climbs out of one bay and straight down into the next. Bouley Bay is a deep-water harbour with a fort on the headland beside it, and the road up from it is the one the hill-climb races use.
Bouley Bay to Rozel — the gentle end
The cliffs soften, the path drops through woods, and Rozel is a small harbour village looking across to France. A dolmen sits in the field above the bay. From here the coast turns south towards St Catherine and Gorey.
