La Crête Fort

The story

Built in 1834 on the headland at Bonne Nuit at a cost of £971, the contractor a Mr Slater. It was designed for one officer and thirty other ranks of the Royal Jersey Militia, with two 18-pounders and four 12-pounders — guns that had not arrived by the time the fort was finished. It lost its military importance in the second half of the nineteenth century and was abandoned. The Germans reinforced it as Resistance Point La Crête, with an anti-tank gun of 37 mm, a heavy machine gun, two light machine guns, a mortar and a searchlight, held by three NCOs and seventeen men. From 1968 it served as the Lieutenant-Governor's summer residence, and it passed into public ownership in 2006.
